GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 3rd May, 1920.

My Lord,
With reference to your despatch No.83 of the 9th March, 1920, I have the honour to forward for Your Lordship's information a statement by Sergeant Hoare of the Police Force regarding the death of Inspector Lamont.
As stated in my telegram the medical authorities reported that the cause of his death was acute gastro- enteritis.
Inspector Lamont was devoted to his work in the New Territories and had no doubt been subject to slight attacks of malarial fever which is prevalent in some parts of the New Territories, and although nothing further is known beyond what is reported by Sergeant Hoare it is probable that Inspector Lamont had been feeling ill for some days and had attributed the cause to malaria and for that reason did not consider it
necessary to see the Medical Officer.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,
humble servant,
7. E. Stabbe
Governor,&c.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
VISCOUNT MILNER, G.C.B.,
